Manufacturing Workflow

General rules and procedures to produce parts for RAID

Part Types

We have the following basic part types:

  • Tube

  • Flat/Sheet

  • Bent

  • Shaft/Spacer

  • 3D Print

Part Type Process Flows

The image below shows the basic process for the parts that we will be manufacturing. There are some rules that apply to all parts which will be outlined below.

Standard Rules

This set of rules will apply to all parts that are manufactured by us.

Rule 1: Part Numbering

All parts produced must have their part numbers written in sharpie on them. If you wish to learn more about how part numbers are assigned, please read this Part Numbering and Nomenclature.

For manufacturing, once a part has had any physical work completed (cutting, CNCing, lathe, 3D printing), the part number needs to be written on it in sharpie.

Rule 2: Parts Have Homes

During the manufacturing process, all parts that are created need to be placed in their appropriate subsystem storage location. If a part is not finished during a single session, it can be left in the WIP location for that work center. As soon as a part is complete, please place it in its home.

Rule 3: Track Your Work

If you are working on a part, please keep your work up to date. Best practice is to update the subitem status after you complete the full quantity of the specific part you are working on.

Monday.com Processes

You will be assigned work by the subteam captain. When you complete your subitem, please mark it as done. Items will automatically move to the next step in the process and have a new subitem created.

💻 Gather Part Information (Desktop)

This process is best done using a computer. If you are using your phone, please follow the process for mobile.

To easily see all information about a part such as material type and size, you can follow these steps:

Step 1: Hover Over Part

As seen in the image below, you can hover over a part to show the "Open Part" button. Press this button.

Step 2: View Part Information

After pressing the "Open Part" button, the relevant item information will be displayed as shown after scrolling.

📱 Gather Part Information (Mobile)

On mobile, you will want to change your board view to the correct option before clicking on a part. This can be done following the steps below.

Step 1: Change Board View

Click on the top left dropdown menu.

Step 2: Select View

Based on what part you are working on, select the correct view. You will need to scroll down a little bit to see the appropriate views.

Step 3: View Part Information

After clicking on the part you want to view, the necessary information for the part type will be easily viewable by scrolling through the list of fields.

Manufacturing Glossary

CAM

Stands for Computer Aided Manufacturing, which is the process of creating the digital instructions for the CNC on how to cut a certain part. More information can be found in this document: CAM Programming

CNC

Stands for Computer Numerical Control, which is the process of an automated machine following CAM instructions to cut a part or parts. More information can be found in this document: CNC Machining

Rework

The process of redoing a step in the manufacturing process to a part that is currently being worked on.

Work Center

A work center is a location/piece of equipment where work is performed. Our manufacturing space has the following work centers:

  • CNC Router — Used for precisely placing holes in tubes and for cutting parts out of flat sheet goods.

  • Lathe — Used for precisely cutting shafts and spacers to length, along with cutting rotational features into shafts.

  • Metal Break — Used for bending metal.

  • Drill Press — Used for manually drilling holes.

  • Horizontal Band Saw — Used for cutting tubes to length.

  • 3D Printer

  • Laser — Currently not in use by the team.

WIP

Stands for Work in Progress. This is any part that is currently being worked on in any stage of manufacturing prior to its completion.
