Leadership Selection

The leadership selection process is designed to elevate the most qualified candidate to a leadership role. This process involves students expressing desire to be in leadership and then team mentors interview and selecting the next years leadership.

Process Overview

  1. Students complete an application for each role they desire to be captain for

  2. Mentors complete candidate interviews for each application

  3. Mentors meet and select students to be in leadership positions

Process Details

Application

The application consists of a few short answer and a few long response questions. These questions are designed such that mentors can learn about the students before completing interviews. Students have the ability to complete the application on paper or via a digital form to ensure equitable access.

Interviews

Mentors will break into groups of 3-5 to complete interviews for each application. These interviews will be conducted during a team meeting after our final event, at a date that is available to all interested students. Every effort is made to ensure the primary mentor of each sub team is in the respective interview group.

Selection

After completing all interviews, mentors will meet to select team leadership. The criteria for selection is not published as the needs of the team and experience of our students varies year to year. Any student that completes an interview may request feedback on their interview. Students should not expect to gather information as to why they may or may not not have been selected for a leadership position

Policies

There are a few policies that the team will adhere to:

  1. Students are responsible for submitting their application prior to the published deadline. No exceptions will be made.

  2. Any mentor that is related to or cares for a student will recuse themselves from the interview and selection process for any sub team leadership position that student is applying to.

  3. Students are responsible for alerting the mentors if they will not be able to make the scheduled interview date.
